Heavy rains fell last week ending months-long drought in Mahawilachchiya. Though the drought hit the North Central Province badly, Mahawilachchiya escaped water shortages as there was ample water in the Mahawilachchiya Reservoir. Drinking water too was available as there is pipe borne water in the village built by community water projects. The cultivations also were not affected and the farmers reaped a good vegetable harvest.
Yet everyone was eagerly waiting for rains as they wanted to see greenery back in the village. It rains in the dawn than in the day time so that the farmers can continue harvesting rice cultivations during the day. Farmers mostly use combined harvesters for harvesting than the old way of manual labor now. Rains are welcome in Mahawilachchiya. If the rains fill Mahawilachchiya reservoir like in the last season, the farmers will be able to cultivate both Yala and Maha seasons this time too.
