Mr. Qurro Lopez from Spain volunteered at Horizon Lanka in October, 2017. He taught Spanish language to the students and the students were very fast in learning this totally new language. In addition to teaching, he brought a lot of gifts to the students at Horizon Academy – Mahawilachchiya. Tharushika Rathnayaka and Pramodhya Gunarathna received one tab each and the junior students got toys from him. Before he left Sri Lanka, he donated 90,000 LKR (500 EUR) raised by EK ONG KAR MALOGA Yoga School in Spain to be distributed among the students. This donation covers the academic and healthcare expenses of the students for the year 2017. (2017 was a bad year for the whole village as their parents’ farms did not yield any crops due to the drought. So, this financial assistance means a lot to them. It is the same for this year also since the village did not get sufficient rains for the third consecutive year.)
When asked to whom the credit should go for this generous donation, a delighted Mr. Lopez said, “Consider it came from God.”
The students, the parents and the Horizon Lanka Foundation appreciate Mr. Lopez and EK ONG KAR MALOGA Yoga School in Spain for assisting the students in a big way. Thank You.
Happy New Year to all friends and supporters of the Horizon Lanka Foundation! 2017 was a great year for us. We were able to open new schools (four branches of Horizon Academies in Anuradhapura district, Sri Lanka) and expand our reach to help even more kids improve their English and computer skills. Last year, we hosted more volunteers than any other year in Horizon Lanka’s nineteen-year history. Our success last year was due to the hard work of the various volunteers, both local and foreign, that gave their time and energy to helping the students. Of course, our success was also dependent on the generous donations of various supporters of Horizon Lanka.
Now that the New Year is upon us, we are looking to start things of right with a fund-raising campaign. We encourage anyone and everyone to please give what they can so we may continue to give rural kids equal educational opportunities. Until March, every donation of $50 or more will receive a copy of professionally edited annual concert of 2016 “A Rainbow of Cultures” – Horizon Lanka Mega Concert – 2016 on DVD and personal thank you letter from a student letting you know how your donation has made a difference in their lives. Of course, Horizon Lanka also welcomes all volunteers and visitors to their locations to teach, work or just have a friendly chat. You can donate us through our Crowdfunding Campaign at https://www.generosity.com/education-fundraising/empowering-children-in-rural-sri-lanka or donating us through our bank account. (Drop an email to info@horizonlankaorg to get our bank details.
Dialog Axiata provided 4G coverage to Mahawilachchiya in December 2017 on our request. They further strengthened the 4G coverage to Horizon Lanka on December 30, 2017 by installing a special device – CenRF 2G dual band repeater with FDD – : GSM Dual Band Pico Repeater -15dBm (without remote monitoring) – to help livestream the Horizon Lanka’s annual concert, “A Rainbow of Cultures” – Horizon Lanka Mega Concert – 2017. The concert was held at Thakshila Public School. After the concert was over, Dialog Axiata fixed the special device inside Horizon Lanka’s computer lab. Now we have very fast and reliable internet connection inside the computer lab through this device.
Horizon Lanka thanks Dialog Axiata for all the assistance it has been extending us since 2002. Dialog Axiata PLC has assisted Horizon Lanka Foundation over the years whenever we requested their assistance.
