We love graphic designing. We had learnt the basics of Adobe Photoshop from our former teachers Dhananjaya Wijewickrama and Prarthana Sewwandi Wijerathna. After they left us to pursue higher education we had no one to teach us graphic designing. But with the arrival of the young Vietnamese volunteers recently now we are learning Photoshop again. Yesterday Miss Truong Thi Bich Trang taught us some good Photoshop lessons. Miss Nguyen Thi Hue Mr. Tran Minh Quan helped us practice those lessons. We love Photoshop. If anyone who is good at graphic designing, please come to Horizon Lanka during a weekend and teach us. We can provide you food and accommodation free. 10 years ago we got a lot of groups of university undergraduates, IT company employees, members of Sri Lankan Diaspora who came here and taught these lessons to our former students. Some of those students are professional graphic designers today and even have their own enterprises by now. Hope you too can help us. Please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org for more details.
Mr. Nuwan Samaranayake, a Sri Lankan born software engineer from Houston, Texas, USA has helped Horizon Lanka from the very inception. Recently he sent a Pi-Bot robot kit for us to learn the hardware and software of robotics. Our senior student Dhananjaya Wijewickrama was able to learn how to use it by reading online tutorials about it. Now other senior students also learn how to use and program it. We thank Mr. Samaranayake for opening a new avenue for us.
Horizon Lanka Foundation started few evening and night classes for the youth in the village. They study English and ICT in these classes. For ICT, they learn Windows OS, MS Office, graphic designing, computer hardware and web based applications. English classes are mainly designed to improve four skills of the youth. English songs and films also are used for lessons making the classes enjoyable.
Most of the youth work for various employees. Some of the youth do higher studies. Mr. Nanda Wanninayaka teaches English lessons while Dhananjaya Wijewickrama conducts ICT classes.
Dhananjaya Wijewickrama (23) is a past Horizon Lanka student who sat for the university entrance exam (Advanced Level) as his second shy last year from the science stream. He sat for the exam as a student of Siddhartha College, Mahawilachchiya. He was successful this year and has been able to enter University of Uva – Wellassa, Badulla. He has selected Export Agriculture as his main subject area in the university.
Dhananjaya entered Horizon Lanka at Grade 8 and obtained an A pass for his English at Ordinary Level and mastered computers as well. He was a bright student at Horizon Lanka and took part in extracurricular activities also.
Laksaviya Foundation (LSF), Australia was introduced to Dhananjaya through Horizon Lanka. LSF has been helping him financially though an ongoing scholarship to support his academic expenses. It was a godsend to Dhananjaya as his father is a retired Grama Sewaka (village headman) and he has to sustain the expenses of the family of four with his meager pension.
Horizon Lanka wishes Dhananjaya a bright future with his academic career.
