Mahawilachchiya farming settlement was established in the year 1957. After the government built the roads and colony houses in the village there was not any permanent rehabilitation of the roads inside the village. Previous government repaired the road from Anuradhapura to Mahawilachchiya but the roads within the village remained uncared for. During the dry season roads become very dusty. Our clothes get dirty. During the rainy season the roads become muddy. Near the bridge of the Lunu Ela River we can’t travel as it floods every year.
Today the new government ceremonially started the road renovation from Tract Four Junction in Mahawilachchiya to Helambewa Junction. It will be carpeted according to the politicians and the officials. The Minister of Highways & Higher Education Honorable Lakshman Kiriella, Minister of Rural Economic Affairs Honorable P. Harrison and the Divisional Secretary of Mahawilachchiya Mr. E. R. Thilakarathna graced the occasion. The two ministers promised that all the other byroads in Mahawilachchiya also will be renovated during this Road Construction Week. But I believe that the other roads will be given just a touch up, not a fully repair.
