Mr Nandasiri Wanninayaka, a young English teacher from Mahavilachchiya initiated the Horizon Lanka concept in 1997, first as a handwritten journal at Saliyamala Public School in Mahavilachchiya with a set of senior students that included Gayani Pushpa Kumari, Anusha Madhubhashini, Waruni Wickramasingha and Nirmala Sarojani. Later due to the constant resistance came from the conservative staff of the public school, despite Mr Wanninayaka’s students achieving high standards of English from local and provincial level competitions, Mr Wanninayaka decided to say goodbye to government teaching career. He resigned from the job as a government schoolteacher. |
| Due to the parents’ pleas to continue education for their children, he started a “school”- a totally independent one - under a huge mango tree in his garden for the interested students. From then onwards, Mr Wanninayaka was able to bring Horizon Lanka to what it is today by fighting against all odds. Now Mr Wanninayaka’s expertise is sought after by both governmental and nongovernmental organizations, private sector locally and internationally. He was hired by the Ministry of Education on a mission to replicate Horizon Lanka model educational programs in selected 25 schools in rural villages in all 9 provinces in Sri Lanka. He is also helping some independent such village level programs voluntarily.
